EXERCISE FOR FOOT DROP
🌼 A Simple Senior‑Friendly Routine for Drop‑Foot Support
(General information only — not medical advice)
These movements focus on:
- Keeping the ankle mobile
- Keeping the calf and shin muscles awake
- Supporting balance
- Preventing stiffness
- Improving circulation
You can do these at home or at Planet Fitness.
🦶 1. Ankle “Alphabet” (very gentle)
Have her sit in a chair.
She slowly “draws” the letters of the alphabet in the air with her foot.
Why it helps:
Keeps the ankle joint moving and activates the small muscles that help with foot control.
Time: 1–2 minutes.
🦵 2. Heel Slides
She lies on her back or sits with legs extended.
She slowly slides her heel toward her bottom, then slides it back out.
Why it helps:
Keeps the knee and hip moving, supports walking strength.
Reps: 10–15 gentle slides.
🦶 3. Assisted Toe Taps
If she can’t wiggle her toes, that’s okay.
Have her try to tap her toes gently while you lightly support the foot.
Why it helps:
Even the “attempt” sends signals to the nerves and muscles.
Reps: 10–15 attempts.
🦵 4. Seated Marching
Sitting in a chair, she lifts one knee at a time like marching.
Why it helps:
Strengthens hip flexors and improves circulation.
Time: 1–2 minutes.
🦶 5. Ankle Pumps
Sitting or lying down:
- Point toes forward
- Pull toes back toward her
- Repeat slowly
Why it helps:
Supports circulation and keeps the ankle joint flexible.
Reps: 20–30 gentle pumps.
🦵 6. Gentle Leg Press (like you already do at Planet Fitness)
You’re already doing this — and it’s perfect.
Why it helps:
Keeps the thigh muscles strong, which supports walking and balance.
🧘♀️ 7. Side‑to‑Side Weight Shifts (standing with support)
She stands holding onto a counter or machine.
Shift weight gently from left foot to right foot.
Why it helps:
Improves balance and helps the weaker leg “wake up.”
Time: 30–60 seconds.
❤️ 8. Short Walks (even inside the gym)
Even slow walking helps:
- Circulation
- Balance
- Leg strength
- Confidence
You’re already doing this by taking her to Planet Fitness — that’s wonderful.
